One Thing…

“The one thing I ask of the Lord
    the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
    delighting in the Lord’s perfections
    and meditating in his Temple.”

-Psalm 27:4 (NLT)

What is your greatest desire? You have one wish. What would you wish for? Fame? Glory? Riches? Power? More wishes? I can only begin to imagine all that I could accomplish with just one wish. I could do so much good, even for the glory of God and for the advancement of His kingdom. But then, a very different thought occurs to me: perhaps Jesus himself is more worthy of a wish than all of the glory I may bring to His own kingdom. Perhaps even He desires to be with me more than He wishes for my calling to be fulfilled. I think, just maybe, that my desire for intimacy with Jesus should surpass all other preferences of my heart. This, I shall declare: my wish is simply to be with my Jesus.

He fulfills all things in my life. His presence is that of all the riches of the earth and then even more. His love is the most powerful force imaginable multiplied by eternity. His sweet voice erases all pride and selfishness, and then it gently weaves a beautiful tapestry of humility and grace in my life. He is my Shepherd, and I shall never be found wanting in His dwelling place. From now until the eternal, my greatest desire will be fulfilled in the piercing gaze of Jesus Christ.

Oh, the freedom that is found when I am trapped in the embrace of the Father of heaven; when the beams of His laughter surround me on all sides. Let me stay in this place forever. You are my one desire. It’s so very easy to get caught wondering if there is any more to my life than being in love with Jesus; every passing minute with Him crushes those doubts into oblivion. I’ve said goodbye to stress, anger, pressure, and doubt. My King has adorned me with his precious gifts: Peace, Joy, Freedom, and Faith.

He hand-delivers the greatest desires of my heart right to its doorstep on a daily basis. The locks come undone with ease. The hinges silently and swiftly swing the door open. I’m met by Glory Himself. He says to me like thunder, “You are my son whom I love. I love you more than you can ever know. May I come in? I have many gifts to give you, if you’ll have them.” My reply is simple: “Welcome. Please, come in. My home is your home. Make it your dwelling place forever, and please grant me the pleasure of never having to leave.”

This is my one, true desire: that I should never have to leave this place. The place where suffering is exchanged for Joy; where anxiety is easily swapped with Peace; and most importantly, where my heart can rest in the calming seas of his eyes. Jesus, let my intimacy with you always and forever be my greatest priority.
